CONTENT
1st act
Elvira, the wife of Mustafàs, the Bey of Algiers, weeps her fate: Bey has cast her off. The choir of the eunuchs, their favorite slave Zulma and Haly, captain of the guards, comfort them: women were born to be unhappy. Mustafà is tired of his harem ladies. He orders Haly to bring him an Italian. If he does not succeed, let him impale him. (Languir per una bella.) Lindoro laments his lot as a slave and longs for a reunion with his lover Isabella. Mustafà asks his Italian favorite slave Lindoro to return to his homeland on the next ship, on condition that they marry and take away the outcast Elvira. (Se inclinassi a prender moglie.) Mustafà tries to make Lindoro Elvira tasty. In this delicate situation, Lindoro is at a loss. (Cruda sort! Amor tiranno!) Haly and his guards managed to capture a ship. Among the loot is also the Italian Isabella. She laments her fate of being trapped, but hopes to make the most of this unpleasant situation. Isabella is actually looking for her lover Lindoro. Her companion Taddeo pretends to be her uncle.
(Ai capricci della sorte.) Taddeo, in love with Isabella, makes her a jealousy scene. Haly tells Mustafà about the capture of the beautiful Italian. (Già d'insolito ardore ne! Petto.) Mustafà is desperate to see the beautiful. Elvira and Lindoro join their fate of traveling to Italy together. Isabella knows how to win Mustafà from the first moment. 2nd act
Everyone laughs that Mustafà has become an amorous fool. Mustafà wants to drink coffee with Isabella. Elvira is to convey her wish. Lindoro manages to convince Isabella of his loyalty. Both decide to flee. (Ah, come il cor di giublio.) Lindoro expresses his joy. Mustafà appoints Taddeo as "Kaimakan" to make himself popular with Isabella.
Choir and aria. (Ho un gran peso sulla testa.) Taddeo is aware of the ridiculousness of this situation, but the impending spike forces him to accept this "honor." (Per Iui che adoro.) Isabella adorns herself for her lover. Mustafà, Lindoro and Taddeo are watching her. Each of them believes Isabella's efforts are his alone. (Ti presento di mia man.) In vain Mustafà tries to stay alone with Isabella. Lindoro and Taddeo are not leaving the spot. When Isabella asks Elvira for coffee and tries to reconcile her with Bey, he gets completely upset. (Le femmine d'Italia.) Haly philosophizes in his own way about Italian women. Lindoro entrusts Taddeo Isabella's plan to deceive the Bey. Taddeo now pretends to be Isabella's lover, which Lindoro does not take seriously. (Pappataci! Che mai sento!) Lindoro calms the upset Bey: As a sign of her love Isabella Mustafà wants to award the Pappataci Order. This honor is associated with a life that consists only of eating, drinking and sleeping. Mustafà is happy to be included in this covenant. Lindoro tells Taddeo that this plan involves the liberation of all Italian slaves. The Italian slaves are ready to carry out Isabella's plan.
