Once upon a time, the former Spanish Count Luna burned an old woman on a funeral pyre, accusing him of bewitching his younger son, little Garcia. In revenge, Azucena, the daughter of this woman, abducted Garcia. Shortly afterwards, the charred bones of a burnt child were found. The old count could not believe in the death of Garcia and, before he died, had his elder son swear never to abandon the search for his missing brother.

15 years later, a civil war is raging in Spain, in which the remaining older son and now Count Luna, participate militarily. The troubadour Manrico, who considers himself the son of Azucena, fights on the other side. Manrico and Luna also face each other in the field of love: both love the lady-in-waiting Leonora, who in turn is in love with Manrico.

One night Leonora Manrico hears a song singing in the immediate vicinity of the palace garden and wants to rush to meet him. Deceived by the darkness, she recognizes in the man, who throws herself into the arms too late the Count Luna, who must now learn that Leonora Manrico loves. The also hurrying Manrico Luna therefore calls for a duel. Luna is defeated, but is pardoned by Manrico.

Some time later, Manrico witnesses a vision of Azucena, in which she relives the death of her mother at the stake. Azucena confesses that she is no longer powerful in her senses, for having vindictively burned a child at that time - out of a terrible mistake, her own and not the robbed one. Manrico's now emerging doubts, however, reassure her: he is her son.

When Leonora receives the hoax that Manrico has fallen, she decides to go to the convent. To prevent this, Luna wants to kidnap her, but is stopped by Manrico, who avails the opportunity and escapes with Leonora to the fortress Castellor, to whose commander he has been appointed.

When Azucenas tries to make a note of Manrico, she is picked up by the people of Luna. Manrico makes a loss to free them, but also gets into the hands of his opponents. The desperate Leonora lends herself to Luna as a prize, in case this Manrico pardons - Luna joins joyfully in this proposal, not knowing that Leonora takes poison to escape a life with the unloved Earl. She still manages to convey the message of his deliverance to her beloved Manrico before she dies in his arms. The raging Luna then orders the execution of Manrico. As soon as it has been completed, Azucena hurls the words at him: "He was your brother."
