1st chapter
In Valton's castle

Lord Valton had promised his daughter's hand to one of his officers, Sir Riccardo. Riccardo has now found out that Elvira loves someone else. Lord Arturo Talbo. He desperately complains to his friend, Sir Bruno Roberton, of his suffering. Bruno tries to comfort and distract Riccardo.
Elvira learns from her uncle Giorgio that he was able to persuade her father to give her heart free choice; Her marriage to Arturo can still take place today. All present celebrate the arrival of the Lord and cheer the young couple Elvira-Arturo. Lord Valton declares that he cannot attend the wedding feast because he has to lead a mysterious state prisoner, who is believed to be a Stuarts spy, from the fortress to Parliament. Nobody is allowed to leave the fortress without a pass, he announces and hands one to Arturo. While Elvira withdraws to be dressed for the wedding and the rest of them follow her, the prisoner and Arturo are left alone. Arturo recognizes the captured Enrichetta, widow of the executed Karl I. Since she faces the same fate, Arturo, as a secret supporter of the Stuarts, is immediately ready to do everything to save her from death.
When Elvira returns, she asks Enrichetta to put on the veil so that she can see how it looks. Enrichetta is doing her a favor. Elvira has to go back to her room one more time. Alone again with the unfortunate woman, Arturo persuades Enrichetta - under the protective wedding veil that hides her identity - to flee. As they leave the hall they meet Riccardo, who does not want to leave Elvira, his beloved Arturo, without a fight. He challenges him to a duel. Enrichetta throws herself in between, the veil falls, and Riccardo realizes his misunderstanding. He decides, glad that Elvira was not under the bridal veil, to let the two of them flee. The wedding party returns to the hall, appalled by the escape of Arthur and the prisoners. Elvira is stunned and maddened by the infidelity she falsely blames Arturo.

Part 2
In Valton's castle

The castle residents lament the lot Elviras. Riccardo reports that Parliament has sentenced Arturo to death. Elvira shows Giorgio and Riccardo her mental breakdown. Giorgio thinks she knows that a sudden joy can restore her mind. He implores Riccardo to save Arturo. Riccardo agrees after a long resistance: only if Arturo makes a deal with the enemy should he die.

3rd part

In a forest
Arturo's love for Elvira drove him back from exile. Sung by Elvira, a romance sounds that Arturo joins. When Elvira arrives, Arturo explains to her, begging her forgiveness, the reasons for his flight. For a few moments, Elvira seems to be back in her mind. But when Arturo's pursuers approach, their senses become confused again; she takes the Puritans' drumming for wedding music and believes Arturo wants to leave them again. The Puritans threaten Arturo. Elvira regains her wits because of the danger of death for her lover. A messenger brings the news of the defeat of the Stuarts and the amnesty for all guilty parties. Elvira falls into Arturo's arms; At this moment Riccardo rushes on the couple and stabs Arturo.
