CONTENTS
Three norns spin on the rope of fate, depicting the past, present and future: Alberich's robbery of the Rhine gold, the curse of the ring, Wotan's self-constitution by cutting his treaty spear out of the ash tree, their withering, their felling, Siegfried's meeting with Wotan. But the rope of fate breaks, the Norns flee down to their mother, Erda. Siegfried says goodbye to Brünnhilde at the Valkyrie Rock and is provided with protective runes by her; Siegfried leaves the Nibelung's Ring as a pledge of love.

1st act
Hagen, Alberich's son, advises his half-brother Gunther and his sister Gutrune to increase the Gibichung's fame: Gunther should marry Brünnhilde and Gutrune Siegfried. When he gets to them, Gutrune, on Hagen's advice, hands him a drink that makes Siegfried Brünnhilde suddenly forget - he falls in love with Gutrune. In order to win her, he promises to get Brünnhilde from the Walkürenfelsen for Gunther. After signing blood brotherhood with Gunther, Siegfried hurries away to win Brünnhilde for Gunther. In the meantime, Brünnhilde is visited by her sister, the Valkyrie Waltraute. She begs them to return the ring to the Rhine daughters in order to loosen the curse. However, Brünnhilde refuses the ring because it is Siegfried's love pledge. Siegfried appears, transformed into the figure of Gunther by his camouflage helmet, walks through the fire and defeats Brünnhilde. As a sign of her marriage - to Gunther - he snatches the ring from her.

2nd act
In a night scene, Alberich warns his son Hagen to win the ring for him. When Brünnhilde, who arrives with Gunther, sees Siegfried and Gutrune as a couple and recognizes the ring on Siegfried's hand, she accuses him of breach of loyalty. Siegfried denies his guilt, but Hagen, Gunther and Brünnhilde decide on his death.

3rd act
On the hunt, Siegfried meets the Rhine daughters, who ask him for the ring and warn him about the curse. But the ring stays with Siegfried. The hunting party joins him, at Hagen's request Siegfried tells about his life so far. While he is speaking, Hagen hands him a drink that will restore the memory of Brünnhilde. Hagen sees this as a confession of breach of loyalty and stabs him in the back with a spear. Siegfried remembers his love for Brünnhilde as he dies. In the dispute over the ring, Hagen kills Gunther, but Brünnhilde is now asserting her original right to Siegfried - and the ring - again: she orders Siegfried to be cremated and throws herself into the fire. The Rhine rising over its banks floods the fire site, the three Rhine daughters drag Hagen, who wants to win the ring for himself, into the depths, the ring has fallen back to the Rhine again. While Valhalla goes up in flames, people are deeply moved to witness the fall of the gods.
