The fat knight Sir John Falstaff, who resides in the Gasthaus zum Garter, has no more money to foot his bill. Convinced of his attraction to women, he would like to combine the pleasant with the useful. He writes two love letters with the same content to Alice Ford and Meg Page, two wealthy citizens' wives, and asks them to go on a date. But they just have fun with the fat drunkard and together they hatch a plan to make a fool of Falstaff. Mrs. Quickly is sent as a messenger of love to invite him to Ford's house between two and three o'clock, because the jealous landlord is not at home there. Falstaff accepts the invitation. Shortly thereafter, Ford paid his respects. He pretends to be Signor Fontana, is in love with Alice, but does not hear from her. Since he has heard of Falstaff's seductive skills, he asks him to do amorous preparatory work for a fee. Falstaff boastfully tells him that he will be holding Alice in his arms today. Ford believes Alice has betrayed himself and storms his house between two and three o'clock, where Falstaff has already met for a rendezvous with Alice. The women just manage to hide it in a washing basket. With laughter, Falstaff is emptied into the Thames. But once again he lets himself be persuaded to go on a rendezvous: As a black knight with antlers on his head, he is supposed to arrive in the nocturnal park of Windsor. There, however, the citizens disguised as elves and goblins fall back and forth and give him a lot of trouble. But also Ford's plan, Dr. Marrying Cajus to his daughter Nannetta, who loves poor Fenton, fails. In general confusion, the right couple finds each other. Falstaff smugly asks who is the one who has been betrayed. They agree: Everything is fun on earth.
