CONTENT
Based on E.T.A. Hoffmann's story The Fraulein von Scuderi created Paul Hindemith and his librettist Ferdinand Lion the three-act opera Cardillac. In the person of the title character, a goldsmith who, as a possessed person, can not separate himself from his jewels and murders them in order to protect them, the opera also addresses the tensions between artist and work, between external society and inner, lonely personality.
The Parisian population is threatened by a mysterious series of murders. The king has the leader of the Prévôté announce that a special court, the "burning chamber" was set up to find the culprit. A lady discovers how reverentially the goldsmith Cardillac is greeted by all. The cavalier explains why: Cardillac is the best goldsmith, but anyone who buys his jewelry is murdered. The lady asks of the cavalier "the most beautiful thing Cardillac ever created" as a gift of love. When he appears at the night of love with a magnificent belt, which the goldsmith created, he too is murdered. The daughter of Cardillac, who loves the officer, is torn: on the one hand she wants to flee with her lover, on the other hand she can not leave her father. But Cardillac does not hold his daughter back - he cares only about the created jewelry. When the officer buys a chain, Cardillac knows he has to kill him. But the attack fails, the gold trader, who suspects the connection between Cardillac and the murders, sounds the alarm. Although the officer covers Cardillac, the goldsmith recently confesses his murders. He is killed by the people; but even in death, his last thought applies only to jewelery.
