The names of Louis Mérante, Léo Staats, Serge Lifar, Albert Aveline and Lycette Darsonval represent a very typically "French" tradition of the ballet "Sylvia", that Manuel Legris also feels deeply interconnected with. His new version, which at the same time is his second full-length choreography for the Wiener Staatsballett, focuses primarily on heterogeneous possibilities for the unfolding of pure dancing and thus also gives wide scope to picturesque moments that are once again furnished richly in detail by Luisa Spinatelli. First performed in 1876, the work has since been being well known as one of the most outstanding ballets of the 19th century.
