At the center of the plot are the lovers Ginevra and Ariodante. She is the daughter of the Scottish king, he is a respected vassal. Soon the wedding is to be celebrated - and the cherished by the king Ariodante is on top of the way to the throne open. The perfect love and happiness of the two, however, is threatened by an intrigue: Polinesso, Duke of Albany, Ariodante not only embraces his happiness, but also wants to become the successor of the Scottish king. So he devises a plan in which he makes himself docile to Dalinda, the lady-in-waiting of Ginerva. This disguises himself at his behest as Ginevra and falls in love with Polinesso. Ariodante, led by Polinesso, sees this scene, believes in the infidelity of his bride, desperate, wants to take his own life and seeks the distance. Even Ginevra, whose guilt everyone assumes, is desperate: For one thing she has lost Ariodante, on the other hand, she is rejected by her father and is to be executed. Now Polinesso, who plays a double game, agrees to fight Lurcanio, the brother of the dead Ariodante, and restore Ginevra's honor. Polinesso falls. An unknown masked knight arrives to fight for Ginevra's honor: it is Ariodante who has learned the truth from the remorseful Dalinda. But before it comes to a fight, Ariodante unmasked, clarifies all betrayal. Finally: Ariodante and Ginevra are reunited and Dalinda and Lurcanio become a couple.
