The French composer Charles Gounod (1818-1893) said in his youth that "one can only have a successful music career by composing operas".
Of the 13 operas he wrote, two later achieved worldwide recognition: Faust and Roméo et Juliette. Based on famous literary works by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and William Shakespeare respectively, both revolve around a love story, with melodies playing the leading role. For more than 150 years, Gounod's Romeo and Juliet have longed for one another, singing and dying on stages around the world. Why does opera have such an enduring appeal? The answer is simple: great solos and four mesmerizing duets by the two protagonists, Mercutio's elegant ballad of Queen Mab, captivating ensembles including Mercutio's and Tybalt's lamentations, a colorful and highly emotional atmosphere.

Thanks to Bedřich Smetana, a great proponent of Gounod's music, Roméo et Juliette came to Prague just two years after its Paris premiere, and its Czech staging at the Neustadt Theater on August 29, 1869, conducted by Smetana, was the very first in the Austrian- Hungarian monarchy. The Estates Theater presented Gounod's opera in German translation on September 11, 1873, then the National Theater in Czech on January 6, 1886, and the New German Theater (now the State Opera) in German again on October 20, 1889.
The current production was created by Slovak director and performance artist Sláva Daubnerová, with music explored by renowned Italian conductor Marco Guidarini.
