At the end of the 18th century, Bohuš, a count's son who was once hunted down by his father because of his liberalism, returned to his home town of Bohemia from Paris. But before he is allowed to reconcile, he and his wife become embroiled in a series of provincial intrigues, turning the locals against both themselves and - over suspicions of "Jacobinism" - the couple.
The opera features a number of common and popular dramatic types – the happily in love Jiří and Terinka, between whom the arrogant Burgrave Filip wants to drive a wedge; the count's power-hungry nephew, Adolf; and the good-natured teacher Benda. The scene at school, in which Benda and the children rehearse a festive cantata in honor of the new master, is one of the most notable in Czech opera.

As in many other Czech dramatic works, here too all the accumulated conflicts are resolved amicably. In addition to the opera's traditional title, director Jiří Heřman brings to the fore the lesser-known original name of the libretto, Mutterlied, which is actually much more aptly suggestive of what Dvořák's opera is about – tenderness, nobility, loving care and the skill of the music , to soften even the hardest of hearts.
