The singer Floria Tosca lives only for her art – and for love. When her relationship with the painter Mario Cavaradossi draws her into a vortex of political events and she finds herself at the mercy of the brutal chief of police Baron Scarpia, the diva is standing on the edge of an abyss. Scarpia tries to blackmail the famous singer into giving herself to him. Her lover is a political prisoner in his hands and only Tosca can save him from the death penalty. On condition that the Baron grants her and Cavaradossi freedom and safe passage out of the country, she appears to give in to his desires. When Scarpia tries to take hold of her, she kills him. However, his power extends beyond his death...

In his production acclaimed by press and public alike, Dietrich W. Hilsdorf takes the aspect of the psychological torture of the heroine to the very limit. Tosca is no longer capable of distinguishing between reality and fiction. To quote George Orwell: “Reality exists in the human mind and nowhere else.” The constant pressure that Scarpia places on Tosca ultimately drives the singer to madness, which is how her life would also have ended according to Puccini’s original concept.
