In ‘Rheingold’ Richard Wagner sets up the essential components of his ‘Ring des Nibelungen’: power and control and – contradicting these – trust and love. The choice of the former manifests itself in the curse of Alberich, who renounces love in order to secure the ring. However, the gods have also chosen to maintain their power and increase their possessions. Father of the gods Wotan transgresses his own world order to accomplish the building of Valhalla. Originally he had promised its builders Fafner and Fasolt the goddess Freia, guardian of the secret of eternal youth. But that would risk the immortality of the gods. Instead Wotan offers the giants the Rhine gold, which is cursed. The curse promptly demands its first victim: Fafner murders his brother. At the end of ‘Rheingold’ when the gods move into Valhalla, their downfall – literally: “Götterdämmerung” – is inevitable.

The Deutsche Oper am Rhein’s excellent ensemble is able to show all its quality in this new production of Wagner’s Gesamtkunstwerk by director Dietrich W. Hilsdorf, stage designer Dieter Richter and costume designer Renate Schmitze.
