Jealousy is the deadly poison that the Ensign Iago feeds his General Otello drop by drop. Otello is at the peak of his fame. He has power, charisma, popular acclaim and the love of the beautiful Desdemona. However, Iago drives a wedge between them that leads to a crime – a crime of passion that is also an act of desperation. Iago’s infamous plot never doubts Otello’s passion. Instead it targets Otello the thinker, the traditionalist, the successful man who finds the ground removed from under his feet one piece at a time until he turns into his own wife’s murderer and loses any reputation he may ever have had.

In Michael Thalheimer’s production of Verdi (1813–1901)’s late work ‘Otello’ darkness prevails: the eternal night of a brain ruled by fear, mistrust and paranoia within which lone figures glow – above all Iago, the villain, rejected by society, whose creed summons up absolute nothingness. And Desdemona, the ray of light, who seeks a like mind amidst a world filled with intrigue, cruelty and decadence – a man she loves, who will then kill her.
