La Cenerentola is what Rossini calls Cinderella in his opera of the same name. So she too has a hard-hearted step-father and two resentful and self-centred step-sisters who make life difficult for her. However, unlike in the fairy tale, her transformation into a beautiful lady with whom the Prince Don Ramiro falls in love and his dressing up as a servant to woo her without being recognized form the turning points of a turbulent fairy-tale comedy whose magic stems from its spirited music full of brilliant colours. In his legendary production that great operatic conjuror Jean-Pierre Ponnelle used all his powers of witty staging, elegance and humour to allow the work to shine.
