This opera by the Russian composer Sergei Prokofiev tells the horror story of a woman whose love for an angel becomes a devilish obsession. Ruprecht, a decent and worldly man, falls under the spell of Renata, a woman plagued with demons, and sees himself as the protector of this apparent madwoman. He joins her on an adventure in search of her fiery angel that ends before the Inquisition. This lonely woman, filled with desire and a craving for sexuality, who fulfils male fantasies of both innocence and a devilish seductress, is ultimately destroyed by an all-powerful system. Ruprecht, too, risks losing his identity and autonomy.

The director Immo Karaman, whose impressive productions for the Deutsche Oper am Rhein include the four-part Britten cycle and Zemlinsky’s one act opera ‘The Dwarf’, sets this rarely-seen opera in a mysterious sanatorium, directing it as a cinematic nightmare – alluding to classics of the psychological and horror genres in the process – to create a gripping drama that gets under your skin.
