Arabella can hardly move for suitors; not only three counts are wooing her but also the officer Matteo. He, however, is loved by Arabella’s sister Zdenka, who has to dress as a boy because her parents – the compulsive gambler Count Waldner and his wife Adelaide – do not see themselves in a position to bring up both daughters in a manner befitting their status. In order to remain close to Matteo, Zdenka fuels his hopes of Arabella’s love, though she is still waiting for the man of her dreams …

In their last work together Richard Strauss (1864–1949) and Hugo von Hofmannsthal sought to reconnect with the success of “Der Rosenkavalier” and write another opera in which aristocratic flair, Viennese waltzes, enchanting melodies and dazzling orchestral colours come together in an opulent swan song for a bygone world. However, this work, premiered in Dresden in 1933, is filled with a different kind of fragility. Despite the historical setting of the 1860s the two authors nevertheless managed to come up with a telling portrait of their own time: reflecting loss like utopias of a deracinated society.

After “Salome” Tatjana Gürbaca returned to the Deutsche Oper am Rhein with “Arabella” in 2015. The Berlin-born director is among the most successful of her generation. She was named Director of the Year by Opernwelt magazine for her production of Wagner’s ‘Parsifal’ with the Vlaamse Opera Antwerpen / Gent in 2013.
