12th Symphony Concert

Daniele Gatti Conductor

Gustav Mahler
Symphony No. 9 in D major

»The First Work of New Music«

Mahler himself did not live to see the premiere of his Ninth on June 26, 1912 in Vienna. His last completed symphony caused amazement and dismay in the audience. In particular, the compositional techniques, which were revolutionary at the time, irritated his contemporaries: Mahler exhausted the tonal space and turned away from the sonata form and the dualism of themes. The almost complete renunciation of the melodic in favor of new harmonic structures led Theodor W. Adorno to remark that Mahler's Ninth was "the first work of New Music".
