Pique Dame

Opera in three acts and seven scenes libretto by Modest I. Tchaikovsky

Premiering July 1, 2023

In Russian with German and English surtitles

Pyotr I. Tchaikovsky ruthlessly shows Hermann's inner conflict between his unconditional love for Lisa and his manic gambling addiction, with which he hopes to gain wealth and break through social barriers. Musically and dramaturgically, »Pique Dame«, premiered in St. Petersburg in 1890, is reminiscent of the Grand Opéra: pompous images, such as the St. Petersburg summer garden, with large-scale choral scenes meet a psychological chamber play by the protagonists. Like Tchaikovsky's first Pushkin setting »Eugene Onegin«, his penultimate opera »The Queen of Spades«, based on the story of the same name by Alexander Pushkin, was a great success. Tchaikovsky wrote: "Either I am terribly mistaken, or The Queen of Spades really is my chef d'oeuvre". There were new productions of this opera at the Semperoper in 1929 and 1947. The renowned film and opera director Andreas Dresen, who is directing at the Semperoper for the first time, is responsible for the current production.
