L’Orfeo

Favola in musica in a prologue and a five-act libretto by Alessandro Striggio

Premiered April 30, 2023

In Italian with German and English surtitles

After a long courtship, the singer Orpheus has won the heart of Eurydice and is now celebrating his marriage to her. But while Orpheus is still singing about his happiness, he receives the news that Eurydice has died from a snake bite. Orpheus decides to go to the underworld to win back Eurydice or die himself. Guided by La speranza, or hope, Orpheus arrives at the river Styx, which flows around the underworld. It is true that he cannot persuade the ferryman Caronte to take him to the other bank. But when Caronte falls asleep, he crosses over to the realm of shadows himself. Pluto, god of the underworld, is persuaded by his wife Persephone to allow Orpheus to bring Eurydice back to the living. His only condition is that he doesn't look at his wife on the way to the upper world. But on the way, Orpheus doubts whether Eurydice is really following him. He turns around - and loses his beloved a second time. Back on earth, Orpheus laments his fate, but only the echo answers him. Apollo, god of the arts and father of Orpheus, reminds him of the transience of happiness and pain on earth. He takes his son with him to heaven.
