Tugan Sokhiev, who is performing this year's opening concert together with the Munich Philharmonic, is valued worldwide as a magician of sound. Shostakovich's Sixth Symphony, composed in 1939, was shaped by the war. Planned as a large, monumental Lenin apotheosis for soloists, choir and orchestra, the result (apparently in deliberate contrast to the original concept) was purely instrumental and only three movements. Written in the Austrian towns of Bad Aussee and Maiernigg, Gustav Mahler's Fourth Symphony was initially conceived as a »symphonic humoresque«. In the end, despite the »heavenly world« in the fourth movement, she draws a variety of cracks and fractures in the azure-hued firmament.
