Die Fledermaus

Operetta in three acts
Text version by Carl Haffner and Richard Genée based on the Vaudeville »Le Réveillon« by Henri Meilhac and Ludovic Halévy

In German language

Johann Strauss' »Die Fledermaus« from 1874 is a highlight of Viennese operetta: in order to take revenge on his friend Eisenstein, Dr. Falcon aka the bat, a mix-up at Count Orlofsky's ball. There, a marquis and a chevalier, a Hungarian countess and aspiring artists meet. However, no one is who they say they are. It's all masquerade and swindle, and so the prom party ends up in jail. When all masks finally fall and the extramarital affairs come to light, the successful revenge of the bat becomes apparent. In Günter Krämer's production, classics such as the clock duet, the Czárdás or Adele's »Mein Herr Marquis« as well as daily political dialogues have been delighting audiences at the Semperoper since 2003. With bubbling irony in a sparkling champagne mood, »Die Fledermaus« not only creates a happy, lively atmosphere at the turn of the year.
