The plot sounds almost like SALOME: An Egyptian hetaer puts the ascetic ideals of the monk Athanaël to the test. With the promise of eternal life, he manages to lead the beautiful on the Christian path of virtue - only to find that he himself has anything but innocent feelings for the converted courtesan. The Egyptian exoticism and the notorious dance scene at the end of the first act, in which Thaïs seductively drops the covers, gave his scandalous reputation to the work, which premiered in 1894. But despite the great success of the revised second version of THAIS could not establish itself in the repertoire: The extreme vocal demands make even large opera houses to date, before staffing difficulties. In particular, the title role of Thaïs is considered one of the most demanding soprano parts of opera history, in which only exceptional talent shine unscathed.

The young Australian soprano Nicole Car is one of the most important singers of her generation. With her equally moving and virtuoso interpretation of Fiordiligi in COSI FAN TUTTE or Tatjana in EUGEN ONEGIN, she was able to repeatedly confirm this reputation at the Deutsche Oper Berlin. No wonder even Thaïs' extreme temperament is already part of their proven repertoire. Her husband Etienne Dupuis in the role of Athanaël, the love of the beautiful Hetäre should all the easier. The concert performance of Massenet's master-singer-work is led by young Australian Nicholas Carter, who began his international career at the Deutsche Oper Berlin.
