La forca del destino

As the first "modern" opera, consisting of ideas and not individual numbers, Giuseppe Verdi himself ordered his FORZA DEL DESTINO, first performed in 1862. In fact, the entire work refers to the polarity of two opposing emotional worlds, which dominate the main characters almost obsessive: On the one hand, the alleged guilt of the death of Leonora's father, who weighs on her beloved Alvaro. On the other side is the thirst for revenge that drives Leonora's brother Carlo, the both about all limits away to track. Over three hours, an unconditional car chase unfolds, leading three protagonists through a world that is getting more and more out of joint. In wild mass scenes, we experience an uninhibited society in which only the bare survival counts and the violence has replaced all morality. Even the authority of the Church, in whose arms Leonora and Alvaro Protection seek, proves to be fragile and inferior to the power of fate, the energy of evil. This makes LA FORZA DEL DESTINO the last operation whose relevance in the 21st century is repeatedly confirmed by new civil wars and acts of violence.

The last production of this work at the Deutsche Oper Berlin is a legend: Hans Neuenfels' radical updated version polarized the audience in 1982. Now another great director deals with the subject matter: Frank Castorf, who wrote theater history for a quarter of a century with his productions at the Volksbühne and in recent years, among others. with his Bayreuth Ring of the Music Theater in Berlin.
