For many opera friends, Giacomo Meyerbeer's DINORAH has long been known only from a single shot. It was the interpretation of the madcap "Ombre légère" by Maria Callas, which the title heroine of this work identified as the sister of other great opera women such as Donizetti's Lucia, Amina from Bellini's LA SONNAMBULA or Ophelia from Ambroise Thomas' HAMLET. All these delicate heroines flee from a world they no longer comprehend into madness, murder, sleepwalk or dance like Dinorah with their own shadow.

However, as a whole, the opera comoir DINORAH OU LE PARDON DE PLOERMEL, first performed in 1859, is still to be discovered: Meyerbeer succeeds in creating a late playful-poetic and at the same time humorously broken evocation of the romantic world of ghosts and fairies. In his mixture of lyrical, folkloric and comic elements, Meyerbeer's setting of the story revolves around the mysterious circumstances of his pilgrimage, then happily united bridal couple Dinorah and Hoël, creating their own, subtle color palette.

For the Deutsche Oper Berlin, the acclaimed and also on CD published concert performance of the DINORAH in the Berliner Philharmonie 2014 marked the beginning of a cycle of the great stage works of Meyerbeer. As part of the Meyerbeer Days, she will now be heard again, this time with France's new star on Sängerinnenhimmel, the coloratura soprano Sabine Devieilhe in the title role.
