In his penultimate opera, Leos Janácek dedicated himself to the human yearning for immortality: magically attractive and repulsively cold at the same time is the famous singer Emilia Marty, who gives a new twist to an inheritance dispute that has been smoldering for a century with unprecedented factual knowledge. She uses her irresistible erotic attraction with cold precision, because her interest is not in finding the truth in the process, but in her own goal: she must get to the writing of an old recipe. A human experiment on her over 300 years ago gave her an unnaturally long life - now she needs the potion again.

"I make her warmer so people feel sorry for her. I will still fall in love with her, "the composer wrote of his protagonist, shifting the focus from the comic-dialectical argument about the pros and cons of an artificially prolonged life that shaped Karel Capek's literary model to the personal, poignant lament about the eternal emptiness and constant repetition of the always equal in the life of such a singular being.

After their sensational productions of Lachenmann's THE GIRL WITH THE SWEAT WOOD and Xenakis' ORESTEIA, director David Hermann and outfitter Christof Hetzer are now continuing the Janácek focus at the Deutsche Oper Berlin together with Donald Runnicles.
