Princess Donna Clara turns 18 and the whole world heaps her with gifts. However, the Turkish Sultan sends her a very special gift: it is a living dwarf! This misshapen man, between all the splendor and beauty, has her special attention. He enchants her with his singing and fascinates all the more when he does not know about his appearance. The dwarf falls madly in love with the princess and does not see through the coquettish game she plays with him. But then he sees himself confronted with his reflection for the first time in his life. He recognizes reality and collapses dead. Alexander Zemlinsky's THE ZWERG is based on Oscar Wilde's fairy tale "The Birthday of the Infanta" and was premiered in 1922. After Zemlinsky's death in 1942 in exile in the United States, the work quickly fell into oblivion. It was only rediscovered at the end of the 1970s and since then has been inspiring as a subtle, semitone-shimmering seismogram of a highly complex psychological constellation.

It stages Tobias Kratzer, who is considered to be one of the most interesting young German opera directors, who last worked on houses such as the Theater Bremen, the Staatstheater in Karlsruhe and Nuremberg, the Theater Basel, the Théâtre de la Monnaie Brussels and the Frankfurt Opera. In the summer of 2018, his production of LES CONTES D'HOFFMANN will be created for the Holland Festival. In 2019 he will release TANNHÄUSER in Bayreuth. In Berlin, his version of Rameau's ZOROASTRE was shown in 2017 at the Komische Oper Berlin. With DER ZWERG Tobias Kratzer makes his debut at the Deutsche Oper Berlin.
