With WOZZECK, the twentieth century began on the opera stage: no other work should be as influential for the development of music theater today as Alban Berg's 1929 recording of Büchner's drama. Berg does not tell the story of Wozzeck's murder of his companion Marie and his suicide as a great emotional drama, but shows the characters through the kaleidoscope of an alienating musical language. At the center is a maltreated creature whose actions reflect only the treatment she suffers on a daily basis. In this sense, Bergs Wozzeck is less a culprit than a sick person driven mad by misery and humiliation. With this new production, WOZZECK finally returns to the Deutsche Oper Berlin, where in the sixties the scale-setting recording with Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau was created in the title role.

With the Norwegian Ole Anders Tandberg one of the most distinguished directors of Scandinavia could be won for the new production, who already staged Shostakovich's LADY MACBETH OF MZENSK and Bizet's CARMEN at the Deutsche Oper Berlin. The title role is played by the charismatic Danish heroic baritone Johan Reuter, who has already performed at the Deutsche Oper Berlin in key roles such as Verdi's Nabucco and Barak in Strauss' DIE WRAU MITNE SCHATTEN.
