The muse emerges from a barrel. And a wine barrel from which the poet Hoffmann can sing a song in Offenbach's last opera. Out of fateful intoxication, he spins three stories about his unfortunate love: the pupated artist Olympia, the young girl Antonia and the courtesan Giulietta. Three women - or is it just one in the end? Stella, the star in the opera heaven, who celebrates success on stage as Donna Anna, while the now completely destroyed Hoffmann drowns in the drunk at Lutter & Wegner. In LES CONTES D'HOFFMANN, Jacques Offenbach, the undisputed king of the opéra bouffe, made an unmistakably serious sound. The narrative cleverly woven into operatic action E.T.A. Hoffmanns form a panopticon of aesthetic concerns and soon reflect grotesquely, now tragically, the splendor and misery of the world of art and its protagonists.

The French theater director, opera director and costume designer Laurent Pelly brings his international production of success to Berlin. Darkly playful, in imaginative stage worlds and moving choral images, this production paints the drifting of the poet Hoffmann into delusion and delusion in detail. On the podium is Enrique Mazzola, who is already known to the audience of the Deutsche Oper Berlin as an outstanding interpreter of the French repertoire.
