Hector Berlioz was never classical and modest: neither in life nor in art. His musical version of the Faust myth breaks all conventions and genre boundaries. Berlioz titled FAUSTS VERDAMMNIS first as a "concertante opera", then a "dramatic legend". Ultimately, this work is one thing above all: a great spectacle that integrates all imaginable forms. Opera, oratorio and symphonic elements, in addition to lieder, dances, marches, drinking songs, large choral numbers, a Fugen parody or the Quodlibet of layered soldier songs are part of the score. Musically, a composition from the mid-19th century could hardly be more heterogeneous.

This also reflects the title character himself: The world of Berlioz 'Faust is no longer uniform and linear describable. Episodes tell the story of the life and death of a romantic who does not act as an active agent but suffers from the "ennui" in the succession of Lord Byron. Nothing can tear Faust out of this boredom and lethargy, neither martial noise nor folklore, nor anything that Mephisto offers in a musical-theatrical spectacle.

Christian Spuck is one of the most important choreographers of the younger generation. In recent years, he has coined the Stuttgart Ballet as house choreographer and since 2012 director of the Ballet at the Zurich Opera. Christian Spuck works more and more across disciplines in opera and dance. With Berlioz's FAUSTS VERDAMMNIS he introduces himself as a director and choreographer for the first time in Berlin.
