Die Zauberflöte

Libretto by Emanuel Schikaneder / In German with English surtitles

It is rescue at the last second and love at first sight: When Prince Tamino is saved from a monster by three women just in time and sees the picture of an unknown beauty, he is spellbound. He sets out on a journey to find his love, which he learns is in the clutches of the sun priest Sarastro. And the bird catcher Papageno is also looking for his Papagena.

Mozart's opera is an abduction into the magical. She lets the imagination speak where words are silent, love wins where logic fails, and finds nothing in declaring a little magic flute the key to the world. At the same time, the opera touches on those fundamental questions that reflect the deeply human. "The Magic Flute" combines wisdom with high philosophy and the lightness of being with the existential crises of the human soul. This is mainly due to their fairytale-like, folk theater-like and at the same time profound plot and of course the wonderful music of Mozart, but also the loving, deeply human drawing of the characters.

For the staging of this opera, director Christiane Lutz was able to be won over, who already showed a sensitive contemporary interpretation in her staging of Massenet's “Manon” in the 2018/2019 season.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756–1791) and Emanuel Schikaneder (1751–1812) got to know each other when Schikaneder was the principal of the former court theater (now the Landestheater) in Salzburg. The collaboration began 12 years later with the world premiere of the “Magic Flute” on September 30, 1791 in Vienna. Mozart conducted himself, Schikaneder gave the Papageno.

Christiane Lutz directs under the musical direction of Leslie Suganandarajah. With her opera productions a. a. at the Bavarian State Opera, the Theater an der Wien and the Dresden Semperoper she attracted attention. She is working again with set designer Julia Müer and costume designer Dorothee Joisten, with whom she has already realized “Manon” in Salzburg.
