In November 1924, Volksopernddirector Fritz Stiedry and Franz Werfel, author of the bestseller “Verdi. Roman der Oper ”, an exciting plan: The Verdi opera“ La forza del destino ”, which was hardly known at the time, was to be performed in Werfel's post-poetry in the house on Währinger Strasse. The plan was shattered, the "Verdi-Renaissance" initiated by Werfel's translations (those by Simon Boccanegra and Don Carlos still followed) was to start in Dresden a little later. Less than a century later, the German version of the “Force of Destiny” is landing at its destination.

Werfel not only created a highly poetic transmission (Alvaro's great aria, "La vita è inferno all'infelice", begins here with the words "The world is just a dream of hell"), but also intervened effectively in the process: So the famous overture only sounds after the fateful pistol shot that kills Leonore's father and separates her from her lover. Rushed by her vengeful brother Carlos, Leonore flees to a monastery and will only be reunited with Alvaro when she dies.
