Alma Deutscher's “Cinderella” is inspired by the well-known fairy tale, but the young composer has transferred the plot of the opera to the world of music. The setting is an opera house that was formerly run by Cinderella's father and is now ruled by the scheming stepmother. Cinderella is a composer who carries beautiful melodies but is scorned by her new family, especially the stepsisters who are vain wannabe divas. The prince is a poet and in this opera he searches for a melody for his poem. When his words and Cinderella's melody come together, her love is also fulfilled.
Alma Deutscher wrote her first full-length opera at the age of 12. She attracted attention in the music scene at an early age and received recognition from Anne-Sophie Mutter, Sir Simon Rattle and Zubin Mehta, among others. “The Daily Telegraph” wrote about the premiere of Cinderella: “Alma Deutscher is an extraordinary talent. The mere fact that a young girl has the mental energy to compose and orchestrate a two-hour opera is staggering. The result is a lively, self-contained work in the tradition of comic opera. ”Alma Deutscher made her debut in Salzburg as a soloist at the 2019 New Year's Eve concert in the Großer Festspielhaus.
Zubin Mehta described Alma Deutscher (* 2005) as "one of the greatest musical talents of our time". “Cinderella”, premiered in 2016 (orchestral version) in Vienna, is the violinist, pianist and composer's first full-length opera. Deutscher has given concerts around the world, such as at the Lucerne Festival, the Aix-en-Provence Festival, the Beijing Music Festival, as well as at the Wiener Musikverein and Wiener Konzerthaus. In December 2019 she made her debut at Carnegie Hall, New York.
Carl Philip von Maldeghem will stage Alma Deutscher's opera “Cinderella” under the musical direction of First Kapellmeister Gabriel Venzago. Stefanie Seitz, who u. a. works at the Bayerisches Staatsschauspiel, at the Deutsches Theater Berlin and at the Düsseldorfer Schauspielhaus, designs stage and costumes. A new opera by the composer as a commissioned work for the Salzburg State Theater is already being planned for one of the following seasons.
