Acting with attitude: from classical to modern
The Burgtheater is Austria’s go-to address for classic spoken theatre and the biggest spoken word stage in the German-speaking world. Its programme thrives on the friction between classicism and the present – and doesn’t shy away from a challenge.
Its repertoire includes Shakespeare and Schiller, premieres, contemporary plays and discursive formats. Many evenings address whatever is currently preoccupying society, without ever forgetting their artistic ambitions. In the associated Akademietheater, the venue’s chamber theatre, the “Burg” tries out new and intimate themes.
The Burgtheater, therefore, is no museum of theatre history. It is a place where language has an impact, where a large troupe re-examines familiar texts and brings you close to characters, conflicts and concepts.
Where every word counts: your evening at the Vienna Burgtheater
At the Burgtheater on the Ring, you’re greeted by the spectacular staircase with ceiling paintings by a young Gustav Klimt.
But the heart of the house is its troupe. They are considered the soul of the “Burg”, and the Viennese audience worship “their” actors like almost no other. Anyone who spends an evening here experiences acting at the highest level – and understands what makes this venue so unique.

Historical roots of the Vienna Burgtheater
The roots of the Burgtheater extend back to 1741. Back then, Empress Maria Theresa entrusted a vacant ballroom next to the Hofburg to a theatre owner and had it made into a stage. In 1776, Joseph II. pronounced the building the “Teutsches Nationaltheater” (German National Theatre), establishing the heyday of German-speaking drama. Not long after, Joseph Schreyvogel created the programme for the first stage for German classicism, helping Grillparzer achieve his premieres. What emerged in parallel was the legendary “Burgtheater German” – synonymous with polished, noble stage language.
In 1888, the troupe moved to the magnificent building on the Ringstraße erected by Gottfried Semper and Karl von Hasenauer. Embellishing the staircase is a ceiling painting by Gustav Klimt – years before his fame as an icon of Viennese Modernism. This heyday was followed by the darkest chapter: from 1938, the Nazis banned Jewish troupe members from performing on stage.
After the Second World War, the “Burg” returned to its reconstructed home. In 1955, shortly after the State Treaty, it opened with Grillparzer’s “King Ottokar: His Rise and Fall”. Today the establishment, known simply as the “Burg” by Vienna locals, is the largest spoken word stage in the German-speaking region – and remains what it always was: Vienna’s stage for grandiloquence.
